The latest technology for early melanoma detection

Finding melanoma early significantly reduces the chance of it spreading, causing complications, or death. That's why finding melanomas early is so important.

Identifying new or changing moles is key. Many melanomas are found only because they are new or changing - not because they look like melanomas. Change is often the earliest sign.

That's where VECTRA 3D Total Body Photography (TBP) comes in. It's world-leading imaging can map and monitor moles with incredible detail. It's a great new option for people at high risk of melanoma.

Who should consider 3D Total Body Photography?

VECTRA full body imaging might be appropriate if you have any of the following:

many-moles-icon

Many moles on your skin

Over 100 moles on your skin (count them!)

unusual-moles-icon

Moles that are large or unusual

Many moles that are large, unusual colours or shapes

melanoma-icon

History of melanoma

A personal or family history of melanoma

sunburn-icon

Repeated sunburn

Fair skin that has been severely or repeatedly sunburned

You don't need a referral

If you are in one of the appropriate groups above you can book directly with SunLife. A skin check is needed before the imaging and can be booked at the same time. NO REFERRAL NEEDED.

How does it work?

92 ultra high-definition cameras go off at once, this process takes seconds. The software then takes seven minutes to stitch the images together and create a 3D avatar. Your moles are now accurately mapped.

The digital avatar is reflection-free thanks to advanced cross-polarised lighting. This gives a view into the upper layers of the skin and the patterns inside moles.

In the next step, high magnification images are taken of irregular or "atypical" moles using a digital dermatoscope. These are pinned to the 3D avatar for the most detailed assessment. The first cycle of 3D TBP is complete.

On return for repeat imaging, new and old avatars are compared to identify new and changing lesions, aiding in the early detection of melanoma.

The high risk patients, the 3D TBP system is a valuable extra tool to assist in early melanoma detection and provide peace of mind that your skin is being closely monitored.

Interested in learning more about 3D TBP?

A good time to get personalised information about 3D TBP is during a skin check. Your doctor at SunLife will assess and discuss your melanoma risk with you.

Your doctor can tell you more about the process, give their opinion of the possible benefits of 3D TBP in your circumstances, and help you make the right choice for you.

FAQ's

Questions about total body imaging at our Sunshine Coast Care Centre:

How do I prepare for my 3D Total Body Photography appointment?

To prepare for your total body imaging, there are some things you can do to help ensure your images are as clear and useful as possible:

  • Ensure your skin is clean when you come in for your appointment
  • Don't apply any thick or oily creams
  • Thoroughly remove any makeup or lipstick
  • Be prepared to remove your jewellery
  • Wear underwear you are happy to have images in (a disposable option is available)
  • If you have dark or heavy body hair, clipper it short (grade 1 or 2) where possible
  • Avoid waxing or shaving (except the face if regularly shaved) within 1 week prior to your appointment
  • Avoid laser hair removal and fake tan for 4 weeks prior to your appointment

Is there any radiation from the machine? Is it safe?

3D Total Body Photography is entirely safe. It uses sophisticated flash photography and computer software.

There is no radiation, no UV, and no medication involved. There are no moving parts to the 3D imaging machine, and you are not closed in during the imaging.

How long does it take to complete the imaging?

Usually, it takes 20-30minutes for the 3D Total Body Photography process. Remember, this is in addition to your skin check time.

It takes a few minutes to prepare you for your 3D images and a few seconds to take them.

The software needs about 7 minutes to stitch your 3D avatar.

High magnification images are then taken with a special digital dermatoscope. The time needed for this is variable, depending how many irregular or “atypical” moles you have.

The final step is to create your password protected USB with a copy of your images, which takes about 4 minutes.
