Flurouracil / Calcipotriol cream: an innovative approach to pre-cancerous cell treatment
In the world of dermatology, the treatment of pre-cancerous skin cells has been enhanced by the power-duo of Efudix and Vitamin D. This combination has not only made the treatment process better and easier, but has also given a new hope to individuals with actinic keratoses, a precancerous skin condition. The condition can be diagnosed by skin cancer doctors but you may see it as red, brown, rough, or scaly sunspots and skin colour changes as a result of sun damage. It can also be referred to as solar keratoses or field damage.
Vitamin D and Efudix are highly effective for treating affected areas and are most commonly used on the face, neck, scalp, forearms and decolletage
How exactly do Efudix and Vitamin D work together?
Efudix and Vitamin D act on the skin’s immune system to kill off pre-cancerous cells. This paves the way for healthy cell growth.
Efudix is a white topical preparation containing fluorouracil, a chemotherapy drug that has been long proven to be safe to use on the skin. Combining Vitamin D (calcipotriol cream) with fluorouracil enhances the skin’s immune response. This typically results in a shorter treatment time, fewer side effects, and better, longer lasting risk reduction compared to Efudix alone.
Studies have shown that the risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in treated areas is significantly reduced, and this effect can last as long as three years.
When is the best time to administer Efudix and Vitamin D?
Treatment with Efudix and Vitamin D is usually administered during the winter months. At this time of year there is less UV from the sun, reducing skin sensitivity to treatment. This makes it the optimal time of year for effective treatment whilst prioritising your comfort and well-being
What is the course and duration of treatment?
To maximise the effectiveness of the treatment and minimise potential side effects such as redness, dryness, or peeling skin, it is essential for the cream to be applied correctly and followed with a clear and manageable after-care plan. Sunlife has developed a process to guide you in applying the treatment correctly including a first-application appointment with one of our trained nurses and clear written information before and after you have your treatment.
What is the duration and outcome of treatment with Efudix?
The duration of treatment with Efudix + Vitamin D is 4-6 days, compared to Efudix alone which is usually 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the specific area being treated. It is normal to get a reddening of the skin with some flaking, peeling and sensitivity to sunlight. This usually lasts for 2 weeks, but can last from 1 to 3 weeks.
This reaction is entirely normal and is caused by the elimination of abnormal cells in the skin.It should be expected by all patients. Whilst it is possible to have a good treatment result with a mild visible response, a strong response correlates with a good result.
Most people get a good response to Efudix and vitamin D, with a significant or complete reduction in the number of pre-cancerous actinic keratoses, and less flakes or crusts from sun damage.
